Do you feel scared?

When confronted with situations or objects that you feel pose a threat to your well being, feeling scared is a healthy fear responses of your flight-or-fight response designed keep you safe.

When this natural fear response becomes:-

  • An immediate feeling of intense fear, anxiety and panic when exposed to or even thinking about the source of your fear
  • Worsening anxiety as the situation or object gets closer to you in time or physical proximity
  • Awareness that your fears are unreasonable or exaggerated but feeling powerless to control them
  • Doing everything possible to avoid the object or situation or enduring it with intense anxiety or fear
  • Difficulty or not being able to function normally because of your fear

When this is the case, your fear has likely turned to a phobia, the physical effects can include:

  • sweating
  • abnormal breathing
  • accelerated heartbeat
  • trembling
  • hot flushes or chills
  • a choking sensation
  • chest pains or tightness
  • butterflies in the stomach
  • pins and needles
  • dry mouth
  • confusion and disorientation
  • nausea
  • dizziness
  • headache

If you are feeling this way you are not alone, In a 2007 Australian government survey, anxiety disorders (phobias) was the most common class of mental disorders with one in seven (14.4%) people, experiencing anxiety disorders in the 12 months prior to interview.

Sadly phobia statistics reveal that only 23% of all people with phobias seek treatment for their anxiety.

Nearly 17% of people with social phobias develop depression. The majority of them turn to medication, even substance abuse with illegal drugs (nearly 17%) or alcohol (nearly 19%).

But you don’t need to live with a phobia. All phobias are treatable.

While there are well over 500 named phobias, they fall into one of 5 broad categories:-

  1. Situations:- such as airplanes, enclosed spaces, or public speaking
  2. Nature:- heights, thunderstorms, the dark
  3. Animals or insects:- dogs, snakes or spiders
  4. Blood, injection or injury:- needles, seeing blood, accidents or medical procedures
  5. Other:- choking, vomiting, contracting an illness, or costumed characters
